Are Games Becoming Services Instead of Products? The Industry Shift Explained

Buy a game on Friday and it may look different by the time you return a few months later. Fortnite changes with new seasons. Subscription libraries rotate. An online casino can add fresh slots or live tables without asking anyone to download a new platform.

Traditional games still exist as products: pay once, play through the content and keep roughly the same thing you bought. But plenty of modern games now keep changing long after launch, with accounts, updates and rotating catalogues becoming part of the experience.

The Purchase Is Only The Starting Point

Live-service games make the change easy to see because launch day is designed to be a beginning rather than a finish line. A title such as Fortnite can add another season, event, or collaboration without requiring players to move to a completely new game.

In GDC’s 2025 State of the Game Industry survey, 33% of AAA developers said they were working on a live-service title, compared with 16% across the full survey base. Industry veteran Scott Hartsman told GDC in 2025 that players “essentially have an infinite number of choices for what to do with their free time.” For a long-running game, every new season or update is another chance to bring someone back.

Constant updates also mean there is more for players to keep learning. Step-by-step game tutorials have become useful alongside games that add new modes, systems, or mechanics after release, rather than expecting everything to remain exactly as it was on launch day.

Subscriptions approach the same shift differently. Game Pass does not ask somebody to choose one title to own. It sells access to a library that changes with the account. Microsoft said Game Pass annual revenue reached nearly US$5 billion in its 2025 financial year.

A player might spend weeks with one release, try another because it has just arrived and move on again when the catalog changes. The payment is for access to that moving collection rather than one fixed game.

A Quick Test: Product Or Service?

The dividing line is not particularly clean.

Mostly product: buy it once and the core experience stays largely fixed.

Mostly service: seasons, events, or catalogues keep changing around the account.

Somewhere between: a complete paid release that continues receiving expansions or seasonal content.

Plenty of current games land in that last category. They can be sold conventionally and still receive years of additions afterwards.

Casinos Were Already Built Around The Platform

Online casino gaming arrived at a similar structure from another direction. The individual slot, roulette table, or live dealer game still matters, but players usually enter through a platform holding a much larger catalogue rather than purchasing each title separately.

The lobby stays familiar while the contents move. A newly released slot can appear alongside blackjack, roulette and live dealer tables. Open the same platform on a phone and that catalogue has to remain easy to navigate on a much smaller display.

That also changes how individual games are discovered. A player might arrive intending to open one familiar title, then encounter a new release through a category page, search tool, or recently added section. The platform is doing part of the work that a shop shelf or standalone game page once handled. Ontario’s regulated market shows the scale involved. During the 2024–25 financial year, online casino games generated C$69.6 billion in wagers and C$2.4 billion in gaming revenue, increases of 34% and 36%, respectively, from the previous year.

There is also technical crossover with mainstream gaming. Online casinos and modern game services both rely on interfaces capable of organizing large libraries, account systems that work across devices and backend technology that can deliver new content without rebuilding the whole platform. The games themselves are different, but some of the digital infrastructure surrounding them solves similar problems. Licensing, payment methods, mobile access and game selection all sit around the individual titles, which is why the Canadian coverage from Casino.org in Canada looks at those areas as well as the games on offer, alongside operator reviews, regional regulation and payment information.

A favorite slot might be the reason someone signs in, but the surrounding platform decides how easy it is to find another game, switch devices, or manage the account. Game Pass works differently, yet it has a similar relationship between the title and the service around it: games can come and go without the whole platform changing.

What Actually Stays The Same?

Fortnite can start another season. Game Pass can refresh its monthly line-up. An online casino lobby can add another slot without rebuilding everything around it. Returning players still recognize where they are. The account remains, navigation is familiar and new content sits inside something they already know how to use.

Some games barely change after launch. Others are sold once and then updated for years. Casino titles remain individual games even though they sit inside platforms that operate continuously. So the old product model has not disappeared. There are simply more cases where opening or buying a game is only the first version of what the player will eventually see. Come back six months later and the more interesting question may be how much has changed.
